John Hughes lauds the abilities of Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield

Scott Arfield recently scored a hat-trick for Rangers as they eased passed Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership.

Former Scottish Premiership manager John Hughes has lauded the abilities of Rangers hat-trick hero Scott Arfield, but claimed that the one problem with him is that he can play in a ‘number of positions’.

The 30-year-old helped the Gers beat Motherwell 3-0 over the weekend as he scored all of his side’s goals at Fir Park in a composed and clinical display from the versatile player.

Arfield has been one of Steven Gerrard’s most consistent performers this season and has provided his manager with great quality and experience across the pitch.

Former Falkirk boss Hughes, who managed Arfield during his younger days, spoke in awe of the player and what he brings to the table.

“I love Scott. I have been on record before as saying he is the kind of player who will end up being first on Stevie Gerrard’s team sheet because he is a managers’ dream,” said Hughes, as quoted by the Scotsman.

“Actually, the only problem for Scotty is that he can play in a number of positions and you don’t know what his best position is. He could play right-back, trust me. He was a great right-back and able to bomb on throughout a game.

“He can also play sitting midfield, right wing, left wing and come off a striker and into the pockets of space behind him. You look at what he did at Fir Park on Sunday and it was three good goals, really accomplished finishes.”

Those three points at the weekend ensured that Rangers are edging closer to securing second spot in the Scottish Premiership, with rivals Celtic running away with the title once again.

Over the course of the season, Arfield has played various roles for Gerrard from being deployed on the right, the left, a deeper midfield role and a more advanced role in the middle of the park.
