Dedryck Boyata may well be sold by Celtic next month.
John Hartson has told The Glasgow Evening Times he is ‘worried’ that Celtic will lose Dedryck Boyata in January.
The Belgium centre-back has been excellent for Celtic this season, after the Hoops denied him a £9 million move to Fulham during the summer.
Brendan Rodgers has found himself in a very difficult situation over Boyata.
The 27-year-old is still only contracted to Parkhead until next summer, meaning that Celtic will have to sell next month if they don’t want to lose him for free.
Hartson told The Glasgow Evening Time: “I am worried we might lose Dedryck Boyata in January.
“The Belgian has been badly missed and with six months of his contract to go, would the club turn down, say, £6m next month or lose him for nothing in the summer?”
If a £6 million offer comes in, it might well tempt Celtic, but it’s a very tough scenario.
On one hand, the Hoops would hate to lose a player of such value for nothing, but would it be for nothing if he stays at Parkhead and helps the Bhoys to an eighth successive Premiership crown?
Celtic fans might be able to live with that, because there is every chance that Rangers – who are top of the table – could win the Premiership this season if Boyata leaves. He is that important for Rodgers and the Northern Irishman may struggle to find an adequare replacement.
