John Hartson has written on Twitter that he wants struggling Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths to be dealt with compassionately.
Hoops boss Neil Lennon gave the Scot both barrels in a post-match interview after a friendly with Nice earlier this week.
Lennon didn’t include Griffiths in his squad for the trip to France after reports that he returned to training in ‘overweight’ condition last month.
And the Celtic boss confirmed that in an angry interview, claiming it would’ve been ‘absolutely pointless’ to have taken Griffiths due to the fact the conditioning wasn’t there.
The 29-year-old missed the second half of the 2018-19 campaign after being given time off for mental health reasons.
And although Hartson admits that Griffiths has ‘let himself down’, the Parkhead legend wants people to view him with empathy.
Griffiths’s situation is slightly more tragic because he is an absolute beast of a goalscorer.
If he was a nothing player then it wouldn’t be as sad, but this is a striker who scored 40 goals for Celtic during the 2015-16 campaign and his most recent appearance back in March yielded a hat-trick.
The former Hibernian and Wolves hitman is arguably the best goalscorer in Scottish football on his way and hopefully Lennon can help get his body and mind right in time for next season, because they’re going to need him.
