Celtic defender hailed for performance.
John Hartson has told the Evening Times that he regards Kristoffer Ajer as Celtic’s best defender.
Ajer, 20, was a rock at the back for Celtic against Rangers at the weekend, helping Neil Lennon’s side to see out a 2-1 win.
Hartson believes the Norwegian has stepped up and is ready to take the mantel as a leader for the club.
The ex-Celtic forward praised the way Ajer battled to the very end.
Hartson said: “His tackle on Joe Worrall with seconds to go was quite magnificent. To react so quickly, to realise the danger, after 90 minutes of punishing football says a lot for the young man.
“Ajer is now Celtic’s No defender. Boyata will go, Filipe Benkovic will return to Leicester City and Jozo Simunovic has slid down the pecking order.
“Ajer came in for a bit of stick earlier in the season, but he’s been great since the winter break. I’m delighted for him.”
Ajer now has a big opportunity and must back up his performance against Rangers.
As Hartson points out, he is going to be key for Celtic the rest of this season and next.
Dealing with the pressure of being the main man is a mental challenge for him, and Ajer must respond positively.
