John Hartson has questioned whether Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has been using David Luiz in the best possible position.

Speculation is rife that the Gunners could part ways with the Brazilian defender over the coming weeks.

Luiz is only contracted to Arsenal until June 30 and although they have the option to give him a one-year extension, there has been no signature as of yet.

The former Chelsea star, an £8 million signing last summer, has had his fair share of hairy moments playing at the heart of Arteta and Unai Emery’s defence this season.

And former Arsenal marksman Hartson has said on Twitter that the centre-back might be better utilised in a defensive midfield role, where he’s better able to influence the North Londoners’ attack.

Hartson might have a point but, then again, who drops out if Luiz is to play that role? The answer is Granit Xhaka, who has been one of Arsenal’s best players since Arteta took the reins in December.

The Swiss certainly has his critics, much like Luiz, but it makes little sense to drop the former Borussia Monchengladbach star for the sake of an experiment.
