The Celtic new boy has been compared with the legendary Welshman in the past.

John Hartson has told The Glasgow Evening Times that he believes the ‘ridiculous’ comparisons to Gareth Bale haven’t helped new Celtic signing Oliver Burke.

The 21-year-old winger will look to rebuild his career at Celtic over the next five months after joining from West Brom on a short-term loan deal.

Burke was hot property back in 2016 when RB Leipzig signed the then-Nottingham Forest gem for £13 million [BBC Sport].

In doing so, the Kirkcaldy-born talent became the most expensive Scottish signing in history, but he hasn’t lived up to the billing and had only made three Championship appearances for the Baggies this season – all from the bench – prior to joining Celtic.

Burke’s style of play had earned him comparisons with the Real Madrid star just a couple of years ago, and Hoops legend Hartson reckons that it held him back.

“There’s no doubt there is a talent in there. He’s very powerful when he gets going and he’s so athletic to go along with his ability,” he told The Glasgow Evening Times.

“The comparisons to Gareth Bale were ridiculous and they haven’t helped him. Bale is the best British export to Europe ever. It’s like someone comparing me at 21 to Ian Rush. Ridiculous.

“The big transfer fees have probably made people judge him rather harshly too. There is no doubt there is a player in there, and hopefully this move can help him to show us all the player he can be in his own right.”
