Celtic have an eight-point lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.
Sky Sports pundit John Hartson has likened Celtic’s ‘don’t give up’ attitude to that of Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United, who were renowned for scoring late goals.
Brendan Rodgers side did exactly that on Sunday when midfielder Scott Brown netted a last-minute goal during their 1-0 win against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.
The goal by Brown was pivotal in the race for the Scottish Premiership title because it puts Rodgers side eight points clear of Rangers when it could have been two points had the weekend results gone a different way.
The Gers recorded a goalless draw at home to St Johnstone, which provided their Old Firm rivals with an opportune moment to punish them and they did exactly that.
Nonetheless, former Arsenal striker Hartson stated that scoring a late winning goal fills you with great emotion as he mentioned Sir Alex’s United who were arguably the best at it.
“Well they kept going,” Hartson told Sky Sports News on 18/02/2019. “Look at Manchester United over the years with Sir Alex Ferguson. How many late goals did United score?!
“They don’t give up. They keep on going till the final whistle. It was into injury time – I have been in the fortunate position where you score last-minute goals and just the excitement. It’s euphoric.”
Since Rodgers moved to Celtic Park, he has helped the club win the double treble and he will be hoping to achieve the same remarkable feat for a third season running.
Following the results over the weekend, it now seems a tough task for the other Premiership teams to overturn the Bhoys comfortable lead at the top of the table.
Despite their dominance on the domestic scene, Rodgers will be hoping his side can produce the goods on the European stage as they are currently 2-0 behind to Valencia going into their second-leg Europa League encounter.
