Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has had to contend with his players having a number of ill-discipline problems this season.
John Hartson has hit out at the ’embarrassing’ Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor following his sending off against Hibernian on Sunday afternoon.
McGregor was given a straight red late in the second half for raking his studs into the back of Marc McNulty after taking a dropkick. Seconds later, he fell to the ground holding his leg.
The senior Gers man was given his marching orders for his actions, with his team winning 1-0 and only minutes left on the clock. Youngster Ross McCrorie went in between the sticks because Steven Gerrard had used all three of his substitutions.
Nonetheless, former Celtic forward Hartson admitted that McGregor is an ‘excellent’ keeper, but he highlighted some of the antics he has got up to this season.
“What was Allan McGregor doing on Sunday against Hibernian? He must have been taking karate lessons the number of times he’s kicked out this season now,” Hartson told the Evening Times. “The ball has gone, and then even worse than the kick out at Marc McNulty, is the fact that he then goes on to feign injury! That was embarrassing.
“The referee missed him doing something similar against Celtic earlier in the season when he kicked out at Kristoffer Ajer, and while he is an excellent goalkeeper, his antics are increasingly letting him down.”
McGregor’s red card means that he will now miss Rangers’ Old Firm fixture against Celtic on Sunday. The Bhoys will travel to Ibrox having recently secured the Scottish Premiership title over the weekend.
Gerrard’s side last tasted defeat against Celtic and have been on a winning run since then. He will be hoping to keep that run going and building a platform for his team for next season.
But he will have to be without one of his key players in McGregor, who has been outstanding for him in between the sticks this term.
