Steven Gerrard’s Ibrox club Glasgow Rangers would be like West Bromwich Albion if Celtic were like Manchester City, says John Hartson.

Former Celtic striker John Hartson has compared Steven Gerrard’s Ibrox club Rangers to West Bromwich Albion and Celtic to Manchester City, as quoted in The Scottish Sun.

Hartson made the comments following Rangers’ 1-0 defeat to Celtic away from home at Celtic Park in the Old Firm derby this past weekend.

The former Wales international striker has also said that Rangers should aim to finish second in the Scottish Premiership table this season above Aberdeen.

Hartson told The Scottish Sun: “If Celtic were Manchester City, Rangers would be like West Bromwich Albion.

“Rangers’ issue is they are still trying to catch Celtic but they are a million miles away from them. In terms of targets, they should be looking at second place, above Aberdeen.”

Challenging Celtic

Celtic have the best team in Scotland and are firm favourites for the Scottish Premiership title this season, but Rangers should still try to challenge Brendan Rodgers’s side.

Having finished third in the Scottish Premiership table for the past two seasons, ending up second will be a success for the Gers, but Gerrard’s team should be aiming for the top spot.

Celtic have shown so far this season that they can be beaten. What Rangers need is consistency and a run of positive results after the two-week international break.
