Steven Gerrard’s Glasgow Rangers will not beat Celtic to the Scottish Premiership title, says John Hartson.

Former Celtic striker John Hartson has told Planet Football that Steven Gerrard’s Glasgow Rangers will find it almost impossible to challenge for the Scottish Premiership title next season.

Rangers have finished third in the Scottish Premiership for the past two seasons and have failed to challenge Old Firm rivals Celtic for the league title.

With Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard appointed as the new Rangers manager earlier this summer, the Ibrox faithful will expect the Gers to at least push the Hoops next season.

Rangers have been quite busy in the summer transfer window so far, and have signed Scott Arfield, Allan McGregor and Jon Flanagan among other players.

Former Celtic striker Hartson, though, does not expect Rangers to win the Scottish Premiership title next season.

“Stevie is a class act and he will certainly make an impact in that dressing room, but he has taken on a massive job in his first challenge as a manager,” Hartson told Planet Football.

“I think he will find it almost impossible to finish ahead of Celtic this season as the gap between the two clubs has grown massively in recent years.”

Hartson added: “Don’t forget, they finished behind Aberdeen last season, so the idea that they can leap up two places and cut down a big gap with Celtic is not realistic in my eyes.”

Steven Gerrard is unveiled as the new manager of Rangers football Club at Ibrox Stadium on May 4, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Realistic ambition

It is hard to see Rangers manager Steven Gerrard make the team strong enough to win the Scottish Premiership title next season.

Celtic are head and shoulders above the rest of the teams in Scotland, but the Gers should at least challenge the Hoops for the league title.

Finishing second and pushing the Hoops should be Rangers’ main ambition during the 2018-19 campaign.
