Celtic are reportedly keen on Aberdeen defender Scott McKenna.

Celtic hero John Hartson has told the Glasgow Evening Times that he likes the look of Aberdeen defender Scott McKenna, with the Bhoys allegedly failing with a bid today.

The Bhoys have endured a frustrating summer, as after landing loanees Scott Bain and Odsonne Edouard permanently, Celtic have only managed one other signing; veteran left back Emilio Izaguirre returning to the club.

Brendan Rodgers has been begging for signings, and after seeing his side crash out of the Champions League qualifiers against AEK Athens, Celtic are desperate for reinforcements – especially with Rangers impressing under Steven Gerrard.

Fans are keen to see defensive reinforcements arrive, as Jack Hendry is still struggling following his January move from Dundee, Marvin Compper is already a forgotten man and Dedryck Boyata’s contract situation means he may be sold this month.

Celtic have been linked with central defenders this summer, and one of the strongest links right now is with Aberdeen talent Scott McKenna.

The 21-year-old has thrived since coming up through the Aberdeen ranks, and The Scottish Sun report this evening that Celtic have had one approach for the defender turned down by the Dons today.

Aberdeen are understandably reluctant to sell one of Scottish football’s top young defenders, but former Celtic star John Hartson has backed a move for McKenna before next week’s transfer deadline.

Hartson has told the Glasgow Evening Times that he thinks the criticism for Hendry is harsh, but another centre back could be a smart addition – and thinks McKenna is the imposing centre back who can make a difference for the Bhoys.

“Jack Hendry has come in for a lot of criticism of late which I think is a bit harsh,” said Hartson. “He was brought in to get some experience but the way that things have played out he has been pushed into a pivotal role before he is quite ready for it.”

“I actually like the look of Scott McKenna at Aberdeen and I think he is the kind of big, imposing centre-half that could come in and make a difference. There has been a bit of chat about that one but we’ll have to wait and see how it develops,” he added.
