Former Arsenal and West Ham United striker John Hartson has defended Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley on social networking site Twitter.

Ashley has been at Newcastle for 10 years, but the English businessman’s time at the club is coming to an end.

As announced on the Magpies’ official website earlier today, Newcastle has been put up for sale.

Newcastle fans have never taken to Ashley, who has been accused by many of not investing enough money in the squad.

The Magpies also got relegated twice to the Championship during the reign of Ashley, although they are now back in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, former Newcastle and Tottenham Hotspur star Chris Waddle has given his thoughts on Ashley’s decision to sell the Magpies.

“I think the fans will be pleased,” Waddle told BBC News Sportsday on Monday evening (06:36pm, October 16, 2017). “He hasn’t had a great relationship with the fans over the years.

“People forget he has put a lot of money in the club. He has kept them afloat really, let’s be honest, but going to that next level which the Geordie fans want, to be a top-four, top-six team again, they need investment.”

Newcastle are playing in the Premier League this season after winning automatic promotion from the Championship at the end of the 2016-17 season.
