In comments reported by the Daily Record, John Fleck insisted that he feels that he made the right decision to leave Rangers back in 2012 as he struggled to get regular game-time with the Gers.

Fleck made his first appearance for the Light Blues as a 15-year-old in 2007 and went on to make more than 50 appearances for the club before leaving for Coventry City as Rangers dropped down into the third division.

The 27-year-old is now fighting for promotion to the Premier League with Sheffield United and is in line for his first senior cap for Scotland having been included in Alex McLeish’s squad for this international break.

And Fleck seemed to hint that he is not sure that his career would not have played out as it has had he decided to stay at Rangers seven years ago.

“People might say I didn’t do as well as I should have at Rangers but I knew myself that I worked hard. I felt as if I gave it my best shot,” he said, as reported by the Daily Record. “It was my choice to leave Rangers. I was in and around the squad, I wasn’t a first-team regular and I had to go out and find myself as a player.

“Rangers didn’t actually try to convince me to stay. I made that decision completely on my own, with my family, to go and try something new. It was a big call and, looking back, it was the right call. I could have stayed but would I have played? I’m not so sure. I had to go out and get regular first-team football.”

Fleck has been one of the most outstanding midfielders in the Championship this term. He is a key part of Chris Wilder’s system and he may well be playing top flight football next season.

Given his current form, some Rangers fans would be forgiven for wondering how influential he could have been in Steven Gerrard’s side as the Gers struggle for form after an incredibly long campaign.

But judging by Fleck’s comments, it would appear that he is not sure that he would have developed his game as he has done had he stayed given that he was not playing as regularly as he wanted before he left Ibrox.
