Callum McGregor has played a huge part in Celtic dominating the Scottish domestic scene in recent seasons.
John Collins has claimed that Celtic fans ‘didn’t appreciate’ Callum McGregor enough and they would ‘moan’ when he produced ‘one bad pass’.
Ex-Parkhead man Collins worked under the stewardship of Ronny Diela when he was Celtic manager, with McGregor making a breakthrough when they were at the club.
During these past three seasons, McGregor has taken his game to the next level and played an instrumental part in them winning the Treble treble.
But Collins has claimed that the attack-minded McGregor was never always appreciated by the Parkhead faithful and he always had to tell the midfielder to stay strong during difficult periods.
“He scored massive goals for Celtic from the minute he went in,” said Collins, as quoted by the Scottish Sun. “He was a Champions League goalscorer from the off, it wasn’t something he turned into.
“He produced from the moment he was given that first-team jersey and Celtic fans didn’t appreciate him enough. They were the first to moan when he had one bad pass.
“I always spoke to Callum during that period. I told him he was a top player, I was always reassuring him and urging him to keep doing what he was doing. He’s humble, he hasn’t changed and I knew he would go on to have a great career.”
Whilst James Forrest won the PFA Players Player of the Year during the recently concluded campaign, McGregor wasn’t far off from winning the individual prize.
He thrived under the stewardship of Brendan Rodgers by showcasing his all-round midfield skills, whether he is playing a role higher up the pitch or in a more defensive position.
But just like Celtic, McGregor will not want to stop there because after winning eight Scottish Premiership titles in a row, the aim will be number nine for next term.
