John Collins claims Celtic’s Callum McGregor is good enough to play in England

Callum McGregor was a key player for Celtic last season as they dominated the Scottish domestic circuit once again.

John Collins has claimed that Celtic’s Callum McGregor has got a ‘first touch as good as anybody’s in England’ and that he has the qualities to play down south.

Former Celtic coach Collins worked with McGregor during his time at the club and saw him breakthrough the first-team set-up prior to him taking his game to the next level under Brendan Rodgers.

The 26-year-old has been thriving at Parkhead in recent seasons by helping the Bhoys dominate the domestic scene which has resulted in them winning the Treble treble.

McGregor has played in England before when he represented Notts County as a youngster and Collins thinks he can return down south, seemingly to the Premier League, and compete with the best of the best as he made this stunning claim.

“Of course he is good enough to play in England. Without a shadow of a doubt, not a problem at all,” said Collins, as quoted by the Scottish Sun. “Callum McGregor could play in any company. He is a football player who can control and pass the ball, has good stamina, is intelligent, very rarely gives the ball away, penetrates, a killer pass.

“The physicality would not be a problem but he would need to be in a team that plays football. He has got a first touch as good as anybody in England. It is sensational.

“Go and watch him, look at his head during a match, looking, looking. He rarely bumps into people. The ball comes to him in between opponents, which is the sign of a good player. He avoids contact. That’s key for any top-class player in the middle of the pitch.”

During the recently concluded season, McGregor played 59 games for Celtic, scoring six goals and supplying his teammates with 16 assists [transfermarkt].

His former teammate, Stuart Armstrong, who thrived under Rodgers, moved to Southampton last summer, but he has struggled to make a name for himself.

If McGregor were to move to England’s top-flight, it remains to be seen what type of club would push for his services because mort than likely it would be a team outside of Europe.
