Former Everton star John Collins has blasted the club for its treatment of Ronald Koeman and delivered his verdict on life under Sam Allardyce.
Everton have endured a topsy turvy season with Ronald Koeman axed and eventually replaced by the hugely unpopular Sam Allardyce.
The former England boss has done the job of lifting the Toffees out of the relegation zone and into midtable.
But supporters are already fed up with the style of football on display at Goodison Park and Allardyce is under pressure to keep his job beyond the summer.
Everton spent £150 million last summer but that was offset by the sale of star striker Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United for £75million.
The big spending under Farhad Moshiri gave supporters hope of a new dawn where the club could finally challenge the Premier League elite.
Now former Toffees star John Collins has told beIN Sports that the club were too hasty sacking Koeman – who has since been named Holland boss – and delivered his verdict on Everton’s season and life under Allardyce.
“I find it strange when the manager gets sacked after the board gives them a load of money to spend in the summer,” Collins told beIN Sports.
“It’s not good planning, it happens too often in football… when probably the best thing to do is (say) ‘let’s show a bit of patience and (give some) time, let everybody get fit’ but fans get edgy, media jump on the bandwagon, boards of directors panic when they get sucked towards the relegation zone and they pull the trigger.
“But from a purely business, building a business point of view, a manager comes signs five, six, seven players, spends £140 million, they don’t all gel, team gets some bad results, sack the manager, bring in a manager with a completely different philosophy, there’s no strategy.”
The fact Everton have little left but pride to play for this season is an indictment on a season which promised so much but delivered little.
And Collins says the whole picture must be taken into account when deciding Allardyce’s future and whether the season has been acceptable.
“I think you judge a team at the end of the season. Ninth I think will be a decent end to the season for them, but you’ve also got to judge on points attained, league position, entertainment and you’ve got to blend all that together before you make a decision.
“And I think if you ask Everton fans ‘Are they enjoying what they’re watching?’ the answer is ‘No’. If you ask them ‘Are they happy they’re not in the relegation fight?’ They’ll probably say ‘Yes’, ‘Are they happy they’re in the top half?’, ‘Yes’ but trying to get all the pieces of the jigsaw, entertaining, getting enough points to be up top half, scoring goals and you get all that THEN I think it’s success for Everton.”
