John Beresford is a huge fan of the Newcastle United man it seems.
Speaking to The Chronicle, John Beresford has praised Newcastle United’s decision to extend Paul Dummett’s contract, claiming that he is the Magpies’ best defender.
The United left-back put pen to paper on a new deal last month in a move which ties him to his local club until 2022.
The 26-year-old has been an ever-present figure for Rafael Benitez’s side during most of 2018 so far, having missed the first half of the season through injury.
But he has proven his worth to Newcastle in recent months, forcing Benitez to play Kenedy in a slightly more advanced role after the Brazilian was expected to replace Dummett at left-back after joining in January.
And although Beresford is a huge fan, the 51-year-old, a left-back himself who spent six years at St James’s Park, claims that Dummett can be a little better in an attacking sense.
Beresford told the Chronicle: “It was great to see him get his new contract because he really deserved it for all his hard work.
“For me he is probably Newcastle’s best defender. I think his best position is in the middle of a back three and that 3-5-2 formation really suits him.
“He’s done very well but I still think he can improve further – especially going forward.”
Newcastle, who sit just two points above the drop zone, will need plenty of hunger and passion from their players over the coming weeks as they look to stave off the threat of relegation.
But Dummett has both qualities in spades, though all of Benitez’s side must show similar appetite for the fight and keep United in the top flight.
