Liverpool legend John Barnes has claimed that this is the first season he can recall the Reds not only doing well but also looking like they will be able to build on it for next season.
The Merseysiders picked up an impressive 97 points over the course of the 2018-19 Premier League campaign, losing just one game all season.
However, they were up against arguably one of the finest English sides in recent history as Manchester City, who broke numerous records en route to a 100-point haul last term, finished with 98 this time round.
Jurgen Klopp’s charges are also in the Champions League final, where they will face fellow English side Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano stadium on Saturday 1 June.
Since the ex-Borussia Dortmund boss took over at Anfield, Liverpool have steadily improved year on year and now boast one of their strongest and most illustrious line-ups in recent years.
Although Liverpool remain without an English top-flight title since 1990, Barnes thinks the best thing about Klopp’s work at Anfield is that the team are in position to become perennial contenders.
“This is the first year when we have done well, where I have felt we could continue to do it again next year,” Barnes told Sky Sports News.
“But if you look at what Liverpool have done this season… [Klopp] demands a performance of intensity, of determination, of desire, and that’s what you get from Liverpool. So next year I’m not going to say we are going to get 97 points and only lose one game, but I know, come the end of the season, we will be there or thereabouts again.”
Liverpool beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 on Sunday to wrap up their impressive Premier League season.
