John Barnes has told HITC, speaking on behalf of Bonus Code Bets, that he believes Celtic’s Moussa Dembele can have a major impact in this season’s Europa League.

Dembele started for Celtic in their victory over Zenit St. Petersburg last night in the first leg of their European knockout tie.

And Barnes feels that now the French striker is focused again, he will be able to seriously impress.

“I don’t know if he’ll be at Celtic next season, but what we do know is that he’s here now. Very much like Riyad Mahrez, maybe he felt he was going to move but he didn’t so he has to knuckle down and perform,” Barnes said. “He’s a good player in that league.

“Whether he’ll be there next year, they can worry about that when the season comes to an end. They still have the league to play for, and more importantly the Europa League and I think he’ll be fantastic for Celtic in the competition.”

Dembele was indeed in excellent form last night, as he caused Zenit’s defenders no end of problems.

The former Fulham man was tireless in his work up-front, and constantly looked to stretch the Zenit backline, to provide space for his Celtic teammates.

Dembele’s performance helped Brendan Rodgers’ side pick up a 1-0 victory in the contest, with Callum McGregor scoring the solitary goal.

Celtic are now the slight favourites to progress in the tie, ahead of meeting Zenit in Russia next week, to decide which team gets through.
