Liverpool appointing Michael Owen as club ambassador was always going to be controversial, and fans have seemingly had enough.

Owen was a hero for Leeds in the late 90s and early 2000s but ruined much of the goodwill towards him by joining Manchester United in 2009.

After referring to United as ‘we’ during his punditry gig for BT Sport in the Europa League, fans started a petition to have Liverpool remove him from from the role.

The petition has already attracted nearly 15,000 signatures in less than 24 hours.

Former Liverpool defender John Arne Riise took notice of the developments regarding his former teammate on Twitter.

Did he defend Owen? Or try to play down the controversy?

No he offered to jump straight into his shoes.

Riise would be a perfect candidate to fulfil such a role, and even without an official post, is a better ambassador for Liverpool than Owen is.

The Norwegian still speaks highly of the club regularly on social media and interacts with fans.

Revered as one of their greatest ever full-backs, Riise never signed with one of their rivals either.
