The Reds icon has been discussing the Slovakian defender on Twitter.

Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge says he is ‘not a massive fan’ of Martin Skrtel but believes the club ‘need’ to get the Slovakian tied down to a new deal as he is the ‘best’ of what the Anfield outfit currently have in defence.

The 56-year-old took to Twitter to make his feelings on the matter very clear.

Skrtel has recently spoken of his unhappiness at Liverpool’s latest contract offer, something he sees as a pay-to-play deal fitter for older players.

As Opta stats show, no Liverpool player has come close to Martin Skrtel in the air over the past two seasons simply due to how important he has become at Anfield in terms of playing time.

Dejan Lovren and Mamadou Sakho might have won more headers had they played more but the Slovakian has been a firm regular – which is why his reported contract offer more along the lines of pay-per-play seems rather confusing.

Skrtel is less effective in terms of tackles but the 30-year-old is again a prolific interceptor and clearer of the ball.

Another disappointing statistic for the Reds, meanwhile, comes in the form of Skrtel scoring more goals than most of Liverpool’s players over the past two Premier League seasons.
