Liverpool Head of Goalkeeping John Achterberg has told RedMenTV that he wanted the Reds to sign Marc-Andre ter Stegen before he went to Barcelona.
Ter Stegen joined Spanish and European giants Barcelona from German club Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer of 2014.
As reported by The Daily Mail, Barcelona paid £10 million in transfer fees to sign the Germany international.
Liverpool coach Achterberg has now revealed that he told then Reds manager Brendan Rodgers to sign Ter Stegen before he made the move to Barcelona.
Achterberg said: “I recommended Ter Stegen when Brendan [Rodgers] was here, he was at ‘Gladbach and I told Brendan about him.
“So, a few weeks later Brendan came to me and said, ‘I got a call of Chris Hughton and he says this goalie playing for ‘Gladbach is a good goalie’.
“So I said, ‘Yeah, that’s what I tried to say to you!’ but then of course, he goes Barca.”

What could have been…
Ter Stegen is 29 now and is at the top of his game.
The Barcelona goalkeeper is one of the best players in his position and is also a Germany international.
Since 2014, at the club level, Ter Stegen has won the La Liga title four times, the Copa del Rey on five occasions, and the Champions League once with Barcelona.
Liverpool did have issues with their goalkeepers for a while, but since they signed Alisson, they have been brilliant defensively.
Alisson is one of the best goalkeepers on the planet, and while not too many Liverpool fans will be bothered now that Rodgers did not sign Ter Stegen, there will always be a case of what if.
