12 months ago, Loris Karius endured a nightmare in the Champions League final as Liverpool were battered by Spanish giants Real Madrid in Kiev.

Liverpool’s goalkeeping coach John Achterberg has hailed Loris Karius’s decision to leave the club on loan last summer, according to the Times.
12 months ago, the German goalkeeper wrote his name into Liverpool folklore for all the wrong reasons with a horror show in the 3-1 Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid in Kiev.
Karius gifted Madrid the opener as his ill-advised throw rebounded into the net off the shin of Karim Benzema and, later in the second half, he spilled a speculative Gareth Bale effort into his goal.
That proved to be Karius’s last competitive appearance for Jurgen Klopp’s side with the former Mainz stopper joining Besiktas on a two-year loan deal later in the summer.
After a shaky start, the 25-year-old has begun rebuilding his reputation in Istanbul with some impressive performances between the sticks.

And Achterberg, who has worked for Liverpool for a decade, believes an Anfield exit was the best possible solution for Karius.
“He is a good guy,” he said. “He is not a bad goalkeeper, but the situation was not easy for him.
“It was the best solution for him to go and play, rebuild his confidence, and then enjoy his football again.”
Liverpool now have Alisson Becker between the posts and the Brazil number one has proven an inspired addition as the Reds look to exercise the demons of 2018 in Saturday’s Champions League final against Tottenham Hotspur.
