That hasn’t always been how things worked, though. There were times when players spent the best years of their careers at Parkhead.
But even then, the pull of other leagues was always there. One former Hoops favourite has even opened up about regretting a decision he made after leaving Celtic.
Former Celtic player regrets career move after leaving Parkhead
Celtic’s run to Seville in 2003 was something no player wanted to miss, especially as the excitement built around the club. But for Johan Mjallby, it came with a cost that lingered long after the final whistle.
Mjallby has since opened up about his fitness issues following that season and shared his regrets about continuing his career after moving from Glasgow to Spanish side Levante.
The former Sweden international discussed how a persistent knee injury led to his gradual decline. Speaking to the Herald, Mjallby recalled: “The specialist was shocked when he saw that my knee was in such a bad state. He warned me that I could only play at the same level for probably another 12 months.”
“I should have stopped after Celtic and said, ‘nah, my body can’t do this anymore.’ But I just couldn’t accept that. That was really stupid of me.”
He made only three appearances in La Liga before returning home for a single game with AIK, where he decided to call time on his playing days.
Johan Mjallby and the Swedish influence at Celtic
Celtic have had a long-standing connection with Swedish players over the years. Henrik Larsson joined in 1997 and quickly raised the bar. He’s widely considered Celtic’s greatest-ever foreign player, having scored 242 goals across seven seasons.
Mikael Lustig spent over eight years at the club, collecting a remarkable number of trophies along the way, many of which came under Rodgers’ tenure.
Carl Starfelt, Daniel Majstorovic and John Guidetti also made their mark during their time at Celtic. Another former Hoops player from Sweden, Gustaf Lagerbielke, will return to Celtic Park with Braga next week.
