England were woeful last night in their 2-1 loss to Iceland.
Joey Barton was heavily critical of England
Following England’s dismal exit from Euro 2016 last night, Glasgow Rangers star Joey Barton took to Twitter to lament the team in general, and highlighted key mistakes by manager Roy Hodgson, including the personnel taken to France.
Iceland, a nation with the same population as Leicester, triumphed 2-1 in what was in the end a comfortable victory, and Barton took to Twitter to air his feelings:
Wayne Rooney failed to inspire England to glory
Barton certainly has a point. To see long balls being pumped forward to Gary Cahill in the final 10 minutes, while Andy Carroll is sunning himself on a beach somewhere is hard to take. There was no balance to the squad either. Roy picked a multitude of central midfielders, then decided to add to that tally by playing Wayne Rooney there.
West Ham’s Andy Carroll would have been the perfect player to bring on in the final 10 minutes
He chose only one genuine winger, and at no point did he ever have a plan A, let alone a plan B.
Barton also questioned Gary Neville’s credentials, claiming the myth of him being a good coach has been well and truly exposed for what it is:
Many questions will now be asked of the England setup, and it is likely that the slate will need to be wiped clean, with a fresh approach needed from top to bottom.
The FA need to take a new direction after the Roy Hodgson debacle
