Newcastle United have been linked with the Leicester City forward over the weekend.

Joey Barton has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on 29th January, that Newcastle United would be making a good signing by bringing in Kelechi Iheanacho.

The Daily Mirror have suggested that Newcastle will target the Leicester City striker, as they look to improve their strike force.

Newcastle have been searching for a new front man for much of the month to date, as their current strikers have struggled to hit the back of the net with any regularity.

Kelechi Iheanacho of Manchester City controls the ball during the Premier League match between Everton and Manchester City at Goodison Park on January 15, 2017 in Liverpool, England.

And Barton feels that if Newcastle could bring in Iheanacho from Leicester, he would score goals at St. James’ Park.

“I like Iheanacho,” Barton said. “I think he’s a young kids who needs games. I think if he gets games, he’ll score goals. He just needs a consistent run.”

Iheanacho would get the run of games he needs if he was to move to Newcastle, but it remains to be seen whether Leicester would be open to allowing him to depart.

Iheanacho has struggled at the King Power Stadium since signing, but he has just started to hit form.

The Nigerian international netted a brace against Peterborough United in Leicester’s last match, to take his total to four goals in his last three games.

Newcastle may now have missed their chance to sign Iheanacho, with Rafael Benitez desperately trying to get a deal for a new number nine over the line in the next few days.
