Joey Barton wasn’t impressed by what West Ham United fans did on Saturday.
Speaking to Alan Brazil’s Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT (broadcast March 12), Joey Barton has slammed the ‘idiotic’ West Ham United fans who invaded the pitch during Saturday’s 3-0 demolition by Burnley.
Tempers reached boiling points at the London Stadium this past weekend as pitch invasions and hostile crowd protests took centre stage.
West Ham co-owners David Gold and David Sullivan were forced to leave the game early over fears for their safety, while midfielder Mark Noble clashed with one supporter of the East London club after he invaded the pitch.
Such was the hostile atmosphere, a number of children were spotted on the Burnley bench at one point over the volatile nature of the game.
Barton told Alan Brazil’s Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT: “You can’t condone some of the behaviour and I think the issue was some of the West Ham fans taking it upon themselves to sort it out.
“It’s almost like a civil war between the fans. You could see his [Noble’s] frustration with the idiots who were running on the pitch, because that’s what they are.”
The defeat leaves West Ham only three points above the relegation zone and with the toxic environment clouding the team’s results, few would be surprised to see David Moyes’s side continue to struggle over the coming weeks and months.
