Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley and Amanda Staveley were in advanced negotiations back in December.

Staveley had been in advanced negotiations for Newcastle back in December, but was unable to agree a deal with Mike Ashley.
The two parties could not agree a price for the club, with news of the potential takeover bid now thin on the ground.
Ashley has remained in charge, to the disappointment of many Magpies supporters.

However, Barton claims that he has heard that Staveley could still arrive at Newcastle.
He said: “I’ve heard that’s still happening and that it’s still rumbling on. I think it’ll get done.”
If Staveley does take over at Newcastle it would be seen as a major step forward for the North East side.

Ashley has been criticised for not investing enough during his time at the helm, with Magpies supporters growing frustrated.
Newcastle did not spend big in January, but they may just have done enough to secure their safety, as Benitez’s side are currently four points above the drop zone.
