Liverpool defeated their Premier League rivals in stunning fashion to put one foot in the Champions League semi-final.

Joey Barton has taken to Twitter in the wake of Liverpool’s stunning victory over Manchester City in the first-leg of their Champions League quarter-final and lauded Trent Alexander-Arnold’s performance in the 3-0 win.

Despite the Reds being the only side to inflict a Premier League defeat on the Cityzens so far this season, few could have imagined what would unfold at Anfield on Wednesday night with City being left stunned in the same way that they had been in the early stages of the second-half when they met at the same ground back in January.

Mo Salah continued his simply ridiculous season to break the deadlock, before Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain doubled the lead with a brilliant finish from outside the box.

Sadio Mane would then complete the scoring just after the half-hour mark, leaving Manchester City with a huge uphill battle going into the second-leg and leaving Liverpool with yet another incredible European night to add to the collection.

After the game, Barton took to social media to comment on the Reds’ win. But rather than mention any of the goalscorers, the former Burnley man was full of praise for the performance of the home side’s right-back.

It would have given Liverpool supporters a huge amount of pride to see the way that the youngster performed on the biggest of stages as he has come in for criticism for some of his recent performances.

He has been picked out as being one who has struggled in two of their last three games, so it is fair to say that he could not have come up with a better way to answer his critics.
