Everton sold Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United during the summer transfer window.

Joey Barton of Burnley takes a look around the pitch prior to the Premier League match between Everton and Burnley at Goodison Park on April 15, 2017 in Liverpool, England.

Joey Barton has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on 18th September, that if Everton had kept hold of Romelu Lukaku they could have raised a far larger fee.

Everton allowed Lukaku to join Manchester United in a deal worth around £75 million, according to a report in the Daily Mirror.

However, Barton feels that the Toffees sold themselves short – and that the powerful forward is worth far more than the fee that Ronald Koeman’s side received.

“If they’d had held on to Lukaku longer they would have probably have got £105/110 million for him, so they probably ended up costing themselves £30 million,” Barton said.

Lukaku’s absence has already been sorely felt at Everton, with Koeman’s side struggling to find a replacement for the 24-year-old’s goals.

Everton went into the season with high hopes, but their attacking threat certainly seems to have decreased following Lukaku’s departure.

Everton were beaten 4-0 by United yesterday, with Lukaku getting on the scoresheet for his new employers, and inflicting further misery on Koeman’s side.

Everton have made a poor opening to the new campaign, and they currently sit in 18th place in the Premier League table, with just one win to their name.
