Joey Barton has told TalkSport that Tottenham Hotspur could be in danger of losing manager Mauricio Pochettino if they fail to finish in the top four of the Premier League this season.
Spurs suffered a 1-0 loss to Premier League champions Manchester City on Monday night at Wembley, with Riyad Mahrez scoring the only goal of the game in the sixth minute after good work from Raheem Sterling.
The north Londoners missed chances through the likes of Harry Kane, Erik Lamela and Moussa Sissoko, with some fans likely to feel somewhat unlucky to come away with nothing.
Fleetwood Town manager Barton claimed that if Spurs – who currently sit in fifth place – finish the season without Champions League qualification, then they could lose Pochettino to one of Europe’s biggest sides.
“If Spurs are not careful and fall behind that top four group, then it is natural that Real Madrid and the world’s super-clubs will chase Pochettino,” Barton said.
Spurs have enjoyed their best ever start to a Premier League season under Pochettino, sitting on 21 points from 10 Premier League outings after seven wins and three losses – to City, Liverpool and Watford.
Former Southampton and Espanyol manager Pochettino signed a new contract until the summer of 2023 at Tottenham, while Real Madrid sacked Julien Lopetegui on Monday.
