Former Glasgow Rangers midfielder Joey Barton brands situation at Ibrox as a ‘mess’.

Former Rangers midfielder Joey Barton has hit out at the club’s Europa League exit.

It is a week since Rangers were knocked out of the competition at the first preliminary stage, by Luxembourg minnows Proges Nierderkorn.

Barton was speaking via Instagram live, during a question and answer session with fans, watched by more than 3,000.

He was inevitably quizzed about their Europa League elimination, and said there was simply no excuse for Pedro Caixinha’s side.

He said: “It’s a bit of a mess at Rangers. Something is not right if they are getting beat by a team from Luxembourg – especially when that team have only scored one goal in Europe beforehand.

“Rangers just shouldn’t be losing to them.”

This time last year Barton was a Rangers player, having joined as a high profile free agent, but his hopes of leading the club to the league title turned to disaster.

His one Old Firm game ended in a 5-1 embarrassment – and really Rangers have been a ‘mess’ ever since.

Barton never played for the club again, with his contract terminated later in the year.

He is currently serving a FA ban after breaching betting regulations.
