Everton are believed to have agreed a deal to sign Wayne Rooney from Manchester United.
Joey Barton has told the Jim White Show, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on 5th July, that Everton would be making a phenomenal signing by bringing Wayne Rooney back to Goodison Park.
According to The Sun, Everton are set to land Rooney in the near future – with Ronald Koeman keen to link up with the England international.
It it not yet clear whether Rooney will move to Everton on a permanent deal, or as a loanee.
And Barton said: “It’s a phenomenal move for both parties. From Everton’s perspective, even if he doesn’t reach the footballing heights, it’s great as marketing exercise.
“Hopefully he goes back and does the business. There is a lot of young players in and around that Everton squad who can benefit from Wayne Rooney’s experience.”
Rooney’s game time at United has dipped in recent seasons, with question marks now forming over whether the 31-year-old is past his best.
Rooney has struggled to show his top form for the Red Devils in recent times.
At Everton, England’s top goalscorer is likely to have a very important role to play. Rooney will be on a large contract, and the Toffees are likely to see him as a prominent part of their first-team.
Rooney began his career at Everton, and during his last spell with the Merseyside club, he scored 17 goals in 77 appearances.
