Everton’s Matthew Pennington and Callum Connolly joined Leeds United and Ipswich Town respectively on season-long loan deals in the summer transfer window.
The former Newcastle United and Manchester City midfielder believes that Everton should not have asked for loan fees.
The Merseyside outfit loaned out a number of players in the summer transfer window, Matthew Pennington and Callum Connolly among them.
Pennington, 22, can operate as a central defender or as a right-back, and he has joined Championship club Leeds United on loan for the 2017-18 campaign.
Connolly, 19, can play as a right-back or as a left-back, and he has moved to Ipswich Town in the Championship on a season-long loan deal.
Barton has claimed that Everton wanted loan fees for both Pennington and Connolly, and has criticised the Toffees for that.
While discussing about Premier League clubs wanting loan fees from Championship teams to loan out their players, Barton said on The Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT on Monday morning (broadcast from 6am, September 4, 2017): “There are a couple of cases at Everton.
“Everton have got a great young side, a lot of them are in that England Under-20 side, and they are asking for £500,000.
“I think Leeds gave £500,000 to loan Pennington, I think someone was after taking Callum Connolly, a Championship club, I think it was Sheffield United, all of a sudden they want £500,000.
“We can’t afford to do that. We will pay his wages and we will play him, he will play. No, no, no, we want £500,000. That’s embarrassing.”
Everton will be aiming to finish in the top four of the Premier League this season, while Leeds and Ipswich will be targeting a spot in the top six of the Championship during the 2017-18 campaign.
