Joey Barton believes that Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane could rival Alan Shearer’s Premier League goalscoring record.

Joey Barton has told The Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast on talkSPORT (broadcast 11th September 2017) that he could see Harry Kane rivalling Alan Shearer’s Premier League goalscoring record after bringing up a landmark for Tottenham on Saturday.
Kane scored twice in Spurs’ win over Everton at the weekend. The goals were the England star’s 100th and 101st of his Tottenham career in all competitions.

His top flight record is particularly impressive, with 80 goals coming in just 117 appearances, and he will be looking to go past 20 Premier League goals for the season for the fourth campaign in a row this year.
That consistency has led Mauricio Pochettino to compare Kane with Argentina legend Gabriel Batistuta, and Barton has suggested that it is a fair comparison, adding that Shearer’s staggering record of 260 goals since 1992 may be under threat.

“I’ve seen Pochettino say he can be better than Batistuta, and when you look at them they are very similar. They both shoot on sight, usually with great power.
“Kane’s record is scary. He’s scored 80 Premier League goals, the majority of them in the last three years.
“It’s early days but, if I was Alan Shearer, I’d be worried about Kane maybe coming and taking that Premier League goals record.”
After making the bold claim on the radio, Barton took to Twitter to explain why he has the belief that the 24-year-old could set the new benchmark – that no-one has got close to.
As Barton suggests, there are certainly a number of variables that could enhance or dent Kane’s chances of achieving such an incredible feat.
But the fact that he has not really had a bad patch of form at any stage in the last four years – apart from his August struggles – just hints that the prospect of Kane catching and surpassing Shearer is a conversation that will be discussed extensively on a number of occasions in the coming years.
