The third-choice Everton keeper is also out of contract in the summer.

Leeds United appointed Thomas Christiansen as their new manager at the start of the season and he quickly went about putting his stamp on the Elland Road club. One of the more bizarre changes at Leeds was in the goalkeeping position. The reliable veteran Rob Green was forced out, seemingly not fitting the bill for the new gaffer. He instead had Felix Wiedwald arrive, with Andy Lonergan also joining as his number two.

Unfortunately, the German has not been in the best of form and in recent weeks Lonergan has been given playing time as a consequence.

So it is clear that in January Leeds will need to strengthen this area of the pitch and one player who could be perfect for the role is Everton stopper Joel Robles.

Last season he was often the first-choice for the Toffees and put in some great performances for the club. His form however did not do enough to convince at Goodison Park and Jordan Pickford was signed from Sunderland in the summer. On top of that, Maarten Stekelenburg is currently ahead of him in the pecking order.

Robles is now keen on an Everton exit and Leeds could offer him the perfect opportunity to thrive as a number one. He has the attributes to play Christiansen’s style of football and has big game experience with Everton and from his time at Wigan Athletic.

The one-time understudy to David De Gea at Atletico Madrid would be an excellent acquisition, even if initially Leeds can only bring him in on a loan deal.

The good news with a temporary deal is that Robles is a free agent in the summer, so a successful and happy stint in West Yorkshire could lead to a bargain deal next summer.

Of the goalkeeping options out there, Leeds would be hard-pushed to find anyone better suited than Everton’s third-choice custodian.
