Jamie Carragher has said on Sky Sports Premier League (10:56pm, October 18, 2021) that Liverpool central defender Joel Matip is going under the radar.
What’s the story?
Last night on Monday Night Football on Sky Sports Premier League, pundits Carragher and Gary Neville were picking their combined Manchester United – Liverpool XI.
Why?
Well, because United and Liverpool will face each other at Old Trafford in the Premier League this coming weekend.
Among the players that former Liverpool defender Carragher picked was Matip.
Carragher said about Matip: “He has actually probably been better than Virgil van Dijk this season.
“He is player who goes under the radar because he is not a huge name, he has come on a free transfer, he has been there a long time, he has had injury problems, but every time he plays, he is top class. He really is.”
Deserved praise for Joel Matip
We all know how good Virgil van Dijk.
Some would say that the Liverpool star is the best centre-back in the world.
We also rave about Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.
Oh, and Alisson.

How many times have we praised Matip?
Carragher is a former defender and a very good pundit.
So, he knows what he is talking about.
Matip is 30 now, but the former Schalke defender is still going strong.
Matip has made 102 appearances in the Premier League so far in his career.
In those games, the defender has scored five goals.
Interestingly, Matip has lost just eight of those matches and has won 66.
