The 18-year-old seems fed up of playing for Sunderland Under-23s.
Young Sunderland striker Joel Asoro has suggested to The Sunderland Echo that he could leave the club this summer.
The 18-year-old has been a huge hit at Under-23 level and was shortlisted for the European Golden Boy award.
However, the Sweden Under-21 international, whose Black Cats debut came in the EFL Cup under David Moyes last season, has intimated that he could look elsewhere if more first-team appearances aren’t promised to him by Sunderland’s next manager.
He told The Sunderland Echo: “It’s not something you can decide now. We will have to see who the new manager is and whether or not they like me.
“If not, I will have to look for something. I have to develop and can’t just play U23 football all the time.”
Asoro is a very exciting talent and his ambition is obvious, given that he is only 18 and seems already tired of representing the Under-23s.
But a lot depends on who the North-East club appoint to replace Moyes.
Club legend Kevin Phillips is 6/4 favourite with Sky Bet to get the job, while Derek McInnes (5/2) and Garry Monk (4/1) are also in the reckoning according to the bookmakers.
It could favour Asoro – who can also play in midfield – if Phillips is appointed. The Premier League legend, 43, has 92 top-flight goals under his belt. He knows a thing or two about finding the net and he could be the ideal man to help the teenager develop at Sunderland.
