Sunderland’s Joel Asoro was frustrated with his lack of chances at the Stadium of Light under David Moyes.

Joel Asoro has admitted to the Sunderland Echo that he was angry and frustrated while David Moyes was in charge at Sunderland.

Asoro was constantly overlooked at the Stadium of Light last term, when he made just four appearances for the Black Cats.

The youngster was barely given a chance by Moyes, but he has started to breakthrough at the Black Cats now.

Asoro has featured as a substitute in all the matches which Chris Coleman has taken charge of so far.

And the youngster is now hoping be given his first league start of the season against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the weekend.

“Last season, I was a bit frustrated,” Asoro admitted.

“If you look back on the season, we didn’t do well. I can see why [I didn’t get more minutes] as there would have been a lot of pressure on you.

“At Burton, I just felt I needed to do something – it could be defending well or to help out in attack to show the manager I want to play and play well.

“That feeling at Burton … it is hard to say, I have no words. Trying to get that frustration and anger out of my body from last season, that was it – to get my emotions out.

“I would be really happy to start, but it is not my decision. That is the manager’s decision.”

Asoro claimed an assist for Sunderland in their 2-0 victory over Burton Albion, and won a penalty for his side against Reading last weekend.

The Black Cats could now give Asoro a chance to impress at Molineux, but his task will be difficult.

Wolves are currently leading the way in the Championship, and Sunderland go into the contest as heavy underdogs.
