Glasgow Rangers boss Steven Gerrard apparently has little sympathy for the Ibrox stars that are not currently playing.
Joe Worrall has opened up to the Daily Mirror about Steven Gerrard’s ruthless streak, describing how the Rangers boss has already told his squad that he does not want any of the players not involved to ask why they are not playing.
Gerrard has enjoyed an incredibly promising start to his managerial career with Rangers well-placed in the Scottish Premiership and Europa League. And, perhaps unlike previous years, they arguably have the depth to potentially keep battling on several fronts.
But while there are plenty of quality options not getting game-time on a regular basis, Worrall has explained that Gerrard seems to have little sympathy for those who are fit but not playing.
“The gaffer definitely takes no prisoners,” he told the Mirror.
“He said to us, ‘I will play the best team possible from training and games and if you get a shirt to play you had better keep hold of it.’ He said, ‘I don’t want anyone knocking on my door saying. ‘Why I am not playing?’ If you are playing well you get a shirt. If you don’t, you don’t’.”
Gerrard’s philosophy has the potential to possibly prove a masterstroke. Those within the squad with the right mentality will be desperate to impress when they are out of the team as they look to force their way into Gerrard’s thoughts.
And those in the Gers side will have to keep impressing. Gerrard has made it clear that even letting standards slip in training could be costly.
That mantra should lead to the squad pushing each other constantly. And with the potential that Rangers currently possess, that could make a massive difference by the end of the season.
