Goals from Patrick Bamford and Ezgjan Alioski, either side of Mark Beevers’s first-half equaliser, gave Leeds all three points.
There were unsavoury scenes shortly after Alioski’s freak winner on 70 minutes when a rash challenge from Josh Magennis on the Macedonia international led to a melee.
Bolton’s Joe Williams had water squirted on his neck by Leeds midfielder Mateusz Klich, while Trotters boss Phil Parkinson was issued a red card after the scuffle extended into the technical area.
United could and probably should have won the game by a greater margin, but Williams, on loan from Everton, has said on Twitter that Wanderers deserved a point and thanked the fans for visiting West Yorkshire.
The melee aside, it was an ugly win for Leeds, but a win nonetheless.
The result is far more important than the performance at this stage of the campaign, with the Whites challenging for Premier League promotion, so no fan in or outside Elland Road yesterday will care that it wasn’t the most aesthetically-pleasing three points.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side, who sit outside of the automatic promotion places on goal difference with a game in hand, face QPR on Tuesday.
