Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United are interested in Joe Rothwell, but the midfielder is set for a move to Steven Gerrard’s Rangers, according to TEAMtalk.

What’s the story?

TEAMtalk are reporting that Leeds and Rangers are among a number of clubs keen on Blackburn midfielder Rothwell.

Newcastle United, Burnley, Southampton, Brighton and Hove Albion and Crystal Palace are also showing interest in the 26-year-old midfielder.

However, according to the report, the Championship player is on his way to Rangers.

It has been claimed that the former Manchester United prospect will sign a pre-contract in January and then move to Ibrox on a free transfer in the summer of 2022.

Rothwell is out of contract at Blackburn at the end of the season and has turned down a new offer from the Rovers.

Leeds United to miss out?

From this report, it does seem that Leeds will miss out on Rothwell to Rangers.

However, never say never.

We know that in football until and unless you have actually signed on the dotted line, anything is possible.

Perhaps Leeds could think that they still have time to make a late move.

Now, Rothwell may be playing in the Championship, but he is a very good player.

Blackburn manager Tony Mowbray described the former Oxford United midfielder as a “fast manipulator of the ball”, adding that “you can see the fear in the eyes of the centre halves as he breaks past midfield”, as quoted on the club’s official website in December 2020.
