England have achieved something against Sri Lanka that had eluded them for a long time in the 50-over format.
A series win away from home represents a significant step forward after a difficult period on the road, marked by successive ODI defeats and major tournament disappointments.
Joe Root once again found himself at the centre of England’s success, playing a defining role across the three matches.
While the result mattered most, Root’s influence went beyond runs alone, helping shape a more confident and cohesive group.
Joe Root reflects on Player of the Series and England’s progress
Root was named Player of the Series after England secured a 2-1 victory against Sri Lanka, a fitting reward following another composed display that underpinned the win.
“You just want to win games, contribute to winning games,” Root said on Sky Sports.
Reflecting on his role within a changing side, he added: “My role in this team is pretty obvious, and it is nice to help the young guys come through now that I am getting a bit older.”
Root’s unbeaten 111 in the deciding match proved pivotal, but he was quick to highlight those around him.

“It was nice out there today with the way Bethell played and then how Harry Brook took the game on as he did and showed his versatility. This shows what we are capable of as a 50-over team.”
For Root, the series victory carries wider significance. “This is a big step forward for the group after a tough period, especially away from home. It breeds confidence ahead of the T20s,” he continued.
England successfully chased down Sri Lanka’s 304 after posting 357, with Rathnayake’s 121 eventually ended by a Curran yorker as the hosts were bowled out in 46.4 overs.
Harry Brook highlights Joe Root’s influence on England’s young batters
Harry Brook was keen to stress Root’s importance within the dressing room, particularly for the younger players finding their feet at the international level.
“I was working on a few things with Rooty in the nets yesterday, and thankfully, it paid off today. I felt good,” Brook said.
“Rooty is exceptional to have in the side. He helps every day. It was an exceptional performance from the lads.”
Brook’s comments underlined how Root’s experience continues to shape England’s ODI identity.
With senior figures guiding emerging talent, the series win felt less like a one-off and more like a foundation to build upon.
After years of struggles away from home, England lifting ODI silverware on their travels marks a genuine turning point, with Root once again leading by example.
