Tottenham Hotspur defender Joe Rodon has told Football.London that it’s ‘frustrating’ to not be available for Europa League action.
Spurs were in the market for a new centre back over the summer, having seen Jan Vertonghen leave the club for Benfica on a free transfer.
After missing out on Inter Milan’s Milan Skriniar, Spurs looked closer to home by raiding Swansea City for Welsh international Rodon.
Spurs paid just £11million for Rodon, with Jose Mourinho seemingly viewing him as a player to develop alongside the likes of Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier.
Rodon has now made two Premier League starts, and helped Spurs to a 3-1 win at Sheffield United on Sunday afternoon.
Sadly for Rodon, he was signed after the Europa League squad registration deadline, meaning he hasn’t been available to play in Europe, whilst he has been cup-tied for the League Cup too.
It’s reasonable to think that Rodon would have been played in all of Tottenham’s group stage games, and Rodon has admitted that the situation has been ‘frustrating’.
Rodon admitted that he knew it would be this way, but is really pushing to show the Spurs coaching staff that he should be involved in the Premier League more regularly.
“It was a bit frustrating not being eligible in Europa League and the League Cup but I knew it was going to be like that,” said Rodon. “I’ve just got to keep working hard every day, trying to show the coaching staff that I can be involved in the team much more often,” he added.
