Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper Joe Lumley has been brilliant for the Championship side so far this season

Goalkeeper Joe Lumley has made an impressive start to life as Queens Park Rangers number one, after it appeared that he would be playing understudy to Matt Ingram.

The former Wycombe Wanderers man was favoured by R’s boss Steve McClaren after the departure of former shot-stopper Alex Smithies to Cardiff City in the summer, but things didn’t pan out too well for Ingram after conceding 13 goals in the opening four games.

Lumley was installed as QPR’s new first choice goalie and the move has paid dividends for both club and player, but Lumley has praised Ingram and has insisted his own position is not necessary a given come match day.

“It’s healthy competition with Matty- he’s been different class and he’s pushing me every day, he’s working hard and doing really well which then pushes me,” Lumley told football.london.

“I don’t feel cemented in the team, I don’t think anyone can feel cemented in the team because then it pushes you on even further.”

Wise words from Lumley yet a little bit odd considering how well he has done, but it goes to show the respect he has for his fellow professional. Admittedly, the R’s have started leaking goals again so a clean sheet would do Lumley the world of good.

It’s easier said than done, though, with Middlesbrough next up at Loftus Road on Saturday and Lumley will need to be at his very best once again. Rangers haven’t shut anyone out since the 1-0 win over Aston Villa in October, a run lasting six games.

For Lumley and Ingram, it’s imperative that they keep working as hard as possible with the festive period just around the corner. If Lumley was to pick up an injury of any kind, McClaren will want to see a rejuvenated Ingram ready to fill the void at a moments notice.
