According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United talent Joe Hugill rejected both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur last summer.
Leeds United and Wolverhampton Wanderers were also keen on Hugill, but he picked a £300,000 move to Old Trafford instead.
Hugill was with Sunderland at the time, and United will certainly feel that they landed a coup by securing the 17-year-old attacker.
So why did Hugill pick the Red Devils? Well, style of play may well have played a big factor in his decision.
Hugill has told Secret Scout that he picked United because they were ‘attack, attack, attack’ and more more suited to his style than Sunderland were.
Hugill felt United suited his style better than the other clubs involved, which isn’t a huge shock given that Tottenham are quite defensive under Jose Mourinho.
Snubbing Leeds is a shock though given their style of play under Marcelo Bielsa, but Hugill feels that the chance to join United was ‘crazy’.
“The opportunity to play for United was just crazy,” said Hugill. “You’ve got to think about your football. United suited my style. At Sunderland, it was quite defensive, but United is attack, attack, attack. As a forward, scoring goals, [in this team], it comes like an instinct. It is still quite northern as well.”
“We just felt Man United was the right club and I never looked back! Playing for a club like Man United is every kids dream. Signing felt as surreal as anything,” he added.
The teenager has bagged 16 goals in 20 appearances for United across Under-18 and Under-23 games, showing what a talent he appears to be.
