Chris Sutton has taken aim at Joe Hart during his role as BT Sport co-commentator on Wednesday evening after the Celtic goalkeeper’s “horrible” mistake that handed RB Leipzig their second goal of the night – eventually winning 3-1.

Coming into the game, Celtic really needed a win if they were going to stand any chance of achieving success in Group F. Even a third-placed finish. But Leipzig proved too much for Ange Postecoglou’s side in Germany, away from home.

It was Christopher Nkunku that gave Leipzig the lead – breaking from a Celtic corner, and a Callum McGregor mistake. Not a good few days for McGregor, who was sent off against Motherwell on Saturday. Celtic levelled through Jota.

Immediately after half-time, Jota finished well to equalise. Leipzig then had their second goal ruled out, before Hart handed possession to Dominik Szoboszlai – who fed Andre Silva to make it 2-1. Silva got a second of his own, for 3-1.

Sutton said, while co-commentating for BT Sport: “A horror show from Hart. Don’t know what he sees there. Horrible from Hart, it really was. The quickness of mind, composure from Silva. You can’t make mistakes like that, though.”

It was a howler from Hart. Normally so reliable – winning 31 clean sheets in his 64 games before Tuesday night’s clash for Celtic, he let his concentration slip. Hart was excellent at other times during the night, keeping Celtic in the match.

Often, he was incredibly quick off his line as Leipzig tried to break the offside trap. But having ridden their luck with disallowed goals for Nkunku and Szoboszlai, to hand Leipzig a goal as Hart did, will really hurt Celtic and the fans.

Celtic finish the night with just one point from a possible nine, while Madrid take on Shakhtar Donetsk later this evening. Madrid could go to nine points. But with Shakhtar on four and Leipzig on three, Celtic could be knocked out.
