According to 90Min, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Liverpool defender Joe Gomez, who has become frustrated at Anfield this season.

Gomez, 22, was looking to become Virgil van Dijk’s first-choice partner this season, but it really hasn’t gone to plan so far, as he actually find himself even further down the pecking order.

Joel Matip started the season in great form with Van Dijk, and even though he is now injured, it’s Dejan Lovren who has been given the nod to play rather than Gomez.

The England international needs to be playing in order to start EURO 2020 next summer, and recently told The Standard that he is frustrated with his role but is willing to fight for his place.

Still, Spurs appear to be keen, and Gomez should actually be interested in making a move if Tottenham do come calling for his services in 2020, whether that be in January or, more likely, next summer.

Tottenham look set to lose Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen at the end of the season, meaning that there will be a chance for a new defender to arrive and nail down a starting role under Mauricio Pochettino.

Gomez is quick, strong and able to fill in at right back, which has been a real problem area for Tottenham, and he would be able to form a partnership for years to come with Davinson Sanchez with Alderweireld and Vertonghen set to go.

Heading back to London may also be appealing to the Catford-born ex-Charlton Athletic man, whilst he knows plenty of the English players at Tottenham, such as Danny Rose, Eric Dier, Harry Winks, Dele Alli and Harry Kane.

He’d stand a much better chance of first-team football at Tottenham than he would with fellow interested club Arsenal, and if he’s to leave Liverpool in 2020, Spurs should be his priority from a playing time standpoint with also keeping himself at a top Premier League club.

Liverpool would hate to lose such a talented young player to a top four rival, which makes a move seem unlikely, but if Gomez can’t force himself into their side soon, it may become a difficult situation to deal with – and Tottenham should be waiting in the wings to offer the defender an escape route if it comes to that.
