England beat Andorra 4-0 on Sunday, and one of the most interesting things to come from that game was the performance of Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield.

It has long-been discussed that Alexander-Arnold could shift into a more central role for both club and country, and while his performance on Sunday wasn’t mind-blowing, he certainly looked comfortable in that role.

Inevitably, watching Alexander-Arnold strut his stuff in midfield for England had led us to think about his future role at Liverpool, and there is a way he could shift into a more advanced role.

It’s fair to say there is a gap in the midfield at Anfield at the moment. Nobody has been signed after the departure of Georginio Wijnaldum, and there was a feeling all summer that the Reds needed an extra body in that area.

However, it seems as though Alexander-Arnold could be the man Liverpool need in that role.

Of course, shifting Alexander-Arnold into the middle would leave a glaring gap at right-back, but the Merseyside outfit may have a solution there as well.

Indeed, there has been talk of Joe Gomez being able to fill in there, and while he wouldn’t provide the same amount of attacking threat as Trent down that flank, he would certainly shore things up and provide a bit more grit.

The more you think about this, the more sense it makes. Joel Matip’s resurgence and the arrival of Ibrahima Konate has certainly affected Gomez’s chances of playing at centre-half, while Alexander-Arnold could easily be a playmaker in a more central role.

We’re not saying that this is a tactic that Jurgen Klopp should utilise every week, but it may be something he wants to explore, especially if Thiago and Jordan Henderson struggle with the same fitness issues they had at times last season.
