Joe Chalmers will play for Motherwell next season after leaving Scottish Premiership champions Celtic.
Joe Chalmers has told The Scottish Sun that he knew that it was time to leave Celtic.
The 21-year-old defender has left the Scottish giants and has joined their Scottish Premiership rivals Motherwell.
Chalmers came through Celtic’s youth academy, but he struggled to play regularly in the Bhoys’ first team.
The Scotland Under-21 international could make just two appearances in the Scottish Premiership for the Hoops.
At Motherwell, Chalmers will hope to play more regularly – and although he is disappointed to leave Celtic, the young left-back admits that it was time to move on.
“I wouldn’t change my time at Celtic for anything,” the young Scot told The Scottish Sun. ”It was tough to leave Celtic.
“From the football side it wasn’t as hard as I felt it was the right time to move on. But with the amount of good people and the amount of friends I made it was hard.
“But I am 21 now and I just felt it was the right time for me to move on. I just want to play first-team football so I can’t wait to get started.”
Motherwell defeated Rangers over two legs in the Scottish Premiership playoff final, which means that they will feature in the top flight next season.
Chalmers will hope to play an important part for his new club next season, and make sure that they do not end up in the relegation places once again.
